What really matters?
Sure we all work hard each day, trying to make a living so we can provide our family with financial support. Hopefully most of us also have a job that is meaningful and gives us a real sense of purpose.
However, I believe that most things in life that are really meaningful are priceless…they don’t involve money. As I get older I read the obituaries and I notice that while what you did for a living is mentioned, most of the text is about how the deceased treated others.
How much money does it take to smile at someone?
How much money does it take to write an e-mail or hand written note thanking someone for helping you out?
How much money does it take to visit a friend or relative who is in a nursing home, jail, all alone at home, or in the hospital?
How much money does it take to volunteer at a local food kitchen that serves the poor or volunteer at one of the hundreds of quality non profits that serve our community throughout the metropolitan area?
How much money does it take to tell your spouse, children, parents, or friends that you love them?
How much money does it take to inform your legislator about your views pending before the legislature?
How much money does it take to sit on the porch or take a walk with your child and really listen to what’s on their mind?
How much money does it take to pray for those in need?
How much money does it take to only speak nicely about others and never spread harmful rumors?
How much money does it take to authentically listen to others who disagree with you without being disagreeable?
How much money does it take to vote?
How much money does it take to be kind and thoughtful?
Most of the things you hope others will write about you in your obituary do not equate with money and titles –they are priceless acts of kindness …that’s what really matters!
