For the last several years my daughter has supported and raised a beautiful young lady she first met at Operation Breakthrough. Like most of the young children at Operation Breakthrough, this child came from a poor family and had experienced many things in life – through no fault of her own-- that could have broken her spirits but she remained strong.
This young lady graduated from DeLaSalle Education Center and has recently completed her two year degree at Penn Valley. Throughout high school and college she worked full or part time and helped financially and emotionally support her extended family.
Last weekend my daughter and our family took this young lady to St Louis to begin her junior year as an undergraduate student at University of Missouri-St. Louis. It was such an emotional and inspiring weekend. She is the first person in her family to graduate from high school and she has had to fight unbelievable odds to reach this point in her life. I am so proud of her because she is determined to live her dream and to fulfill her potential. She is a very responsible person who has become one of my daughter’s best friends. It was so interesting to see my daughter “mothering and hovering over” this young lady just as her mother did to her several years ago when we took her to college.
President Obama said that “Hope is that thing inside of us that insists, despite evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it, work for it, and fight for it.”
My daughter’s friend has HOPE and because of her we should all have HOPE for the future. I am so proud of my daughter for sharing her love with this young lady and I feel blessed to have this young lady in my life.
