Some always lose in a musical chairs economy

If you are ever in need of “a shot of hate,” read the online comments section after many newspaper reports that relate to recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Sometimes you’ll even find similar remarks about those helped by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, commonly known as food stamps) or even some of the fast food workers who have gone on strike over their minimum wage pay.

HCF Grantmaking in 2013

This year was a groundbreaking year in health care. The passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act will afford many more Americans with the opportunity to access quality health care through affordable health insurance.

It was a productive year for our service area, too. Our grantees worked tirelessly to help eliminate barriers to quality health care for the uninsured and underserved in their communities. Our mission is to provide leadership, advocacy and resources to such organizations.

Looking to 2014

Bridget McCandlessBefore we bid farewell to an eventful year dominated by the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, our HCF associates take a look back at significant events and projects and share their insights about the year 2013.

On day 10 (and the final day) of our year in review, HCF President/CEO Bridget McCandless, M.D., looks toward the new year and the Medicaid discussions in 2014.

The hardest advocacy issue we are going to face in the next several years will be the discussion around Medicaid and how it reaches those who need it most.

Right now Medicaid is a categorical program meaning that people who qualify must be below a certain level of poverty and fit into a special category (child, very-low income parent, aged, blind, disabled, or pregnant).

Initiative helps grassroots organizations fulfill mission

Liana RiesingerBefore we bid farewell to an eventful year dominated by the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, our HCF associates take a look back at significant events and projects and share their insights about the year 2013.

On day nine of our year in review, HCF Program Officer Liana Riesinger updates us on the recently completed Capacity Building Learning Consortium, tailored for small organizations.

HCF is dedicated to supporting all sizes of organizations. We appreciate and see great value in the role that smaller, grassroots organizations play a role in helping to eliminate barriers and promote quality health in our communities. With that in mind, HCF introduced the Capacity Building Learning Consortium, a technical assistance initiative that seeks to assist organizations in becoming more capable of fulfilling their missions. As the HCF lead for this cohort, we wanted to design an opportunity to help support organizations with annual operating budgets at or below $500,000.

5 lessons for communities and funders: Making the healthy choice

Adriana PecinaBefore we bid farewell to an eventful year dominated by the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, our HCF associates take a look back at significant events and projects and share their insights about the year 2013.

On day eight of our year in review, HCF Program Officer Adriana Pecina reflects how funders and communities can work together to make the healthy choice, the easy choice.

If you visit Denver, Colo., and drive along I-25, you will likely pass a neighborhood called Westwood. Located in the southwest part of the city, Westwood is one of Denver’s older neighborhoods. It’s a community that has historically experienced some of the highest crime and poverty rates in the metro area.

I had an opportunity this fall to visit the Westwood neighborhood — to see a community in transition. What I learned from my visit to Westwood has far reaching lessons for communities here in my hometown.

U.S. health care system not built to foster informed and engaged patients

Rhonda HolmanBefore we bid farewell to an eventful year dominated by the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, our HCF associates take a look back at significant events and projects and share their insights about the year 2013.

On day seven of our year in review, HCF Vice President Rhonda Holman reflects on the challenges for patients to be stewards of their health.
