On Wednesday, December 12th I notified the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City Board of Directors of my intention to retire as President/CEO. This was a hard and emotional decision, but it is the right time for my family.
As I look back at my eight years at HCF, I am so honored to have joined the HCF associates, Board of Directors and The Community Advisory Committee members on this journey of starting a new Foundation. Start-ups are fun, challenging and chaotic. But what made this journey worthwhile was being surrounded by very talented, ethical and dedicated people.
Before the Board approved our first grant in June 2005, they established arguably the most transparent and ethical grant guidelines of any Foundation in an effort to ensure that every grant application is given fair and unbiased consideration. That’s the culture the founding board established in the early years and it’s the same culture that I’ll leave eight years later.
In addition to those that I’ve been so honored to have worked with, I am also so proud to reflect on what our grantees have accomplished over the years. Our nonprofit funding partners are an incredible group of dedicated folks who have devoted their lives to help others in need…a pretty good way to spend your time on earth, I’d say.
The Board has established a search process and will be hiring an outside firm to help find my replacement. I will remain HCF’s President/CEO until a new person is hired sometime in 2013. If you are looking for a new job, this may not be the right position for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for an opportunity to serve and treat others like you would like to be treated – then this might be a good opportunity for you to consider.
I am blessed to have been a part of the early days of this Foundation and look forward to all the work that I know this Foundation and our grantees will continue to do to eliminate barriers and promote quality health for the uninsured and underserved. The journey continues.
Happy Holidays to all the faithful readers of Steve’s Blog!
