I wanted to take a moment to pay tribute to Ike Skelton, who passed away Monday.
He will be remembered as one of Missouri’s finest statesmen. He served as a Missouri Senator for six years and then as a U.S. Representative for 34 years.
We often bemoan the long tenure of some congressional leaders but forget how long it takes to learn the complexity of nuanced lawmaking. In many ways, this approach does not allow our leaders to develop the depth of knowledge needed to make thoughtful, middle-ground decisions or to develop working relationships with people of different backgrounds, opinions or viewpoints as Ike Skelton did.
Great communities need great leaders, and we recognize that greatness in the contributions Ike Skelton made to the community he loved and served for decades. We salute this great statesman.
