What a round! The voting for Health Madness round two was open, and then, just like that, it seemed it was time to tally the votes. So, that’s just what we did, and boy, were there some close games. Complete streets and Early childhood interventions both slid into the Sweet 16 by three votes.
Only one prevention strategy has continued to dominate its division: Smoke-free bars and restaurants. Voters really don’t want a side of second-hand smoke with their burger and fries.
The stage is set for two teams in each division to grab a coveted spot in the Elite Eight. Sixteen teams, eight games: who will you choose? We can hardly wait!
Voting for the Sweet 16 is open until 1 p.m., Monday, April 1.
Highlights by division
Healthy Eating, Active Living
While races were close, three of the four games in this division went to prevention strategies that support activity and nutritious food for children in schools. Fans clearly support changes within the academic setting to help encourage healthy eating, active living for our children.
The teeth come out on top again in this division, with Medicaid dental benefits and Essential oral health benefits both moving on to the Sweet 16. Voters clearly see the link and impact of oral health on the body’s overall health and well-being.
Top mental health strategies fell along the mental health continuum from education to early detection to improved access to services for those suffering from mental illness. Both Integrate health/mental health and Essential mental health benefits easily advanced, but voters were split on the other games. Ultimately, Early childhood interventions and Mental health first aid nabbed the win.
The overall favorite in the first two rounds has clearly been smoke-free bars and restaurants. Voters also see the importance of changing policies to reduce tobacco use from increased tobacco tax, to stronger regulations and penalties for underage sales.
Voting for the Sweet 16 is open until 1 p.m., Monday, April 1. You can also view the updated bracket there.
