In our effort to eliminate barriers to quality health for the uninsured and underserved, HCF will announce its 2011 Safety Net Health Care Request for Proposals (RFP) in June. The 2011 Safety Net Pre-Proposal Conference will be held on June 16 at 1:00 at the Pioneer Auditorium (2700 E 18th Street) to discuss the RFP and application process. Register.
HCF/KHI News: Bill Passed to Require Drug Testing on Welfare Recipients in Missouri; Discussions Advance in Kansas
Welfare recipients in Missouri who test positive for illicit drugs after raising the “reasonable suspicion” of a social worker stand to lose their benefits under a bill passed this session by the state legislature.
And an even tougher bill – mandating random drug testing for welfare recipients – will be brought up next session in Topeka, said the Kansas lawmaker who has pushed such proposals in the past. More.

This Week on Steve's Blog: How You Can Help Feed Hungry Children
Last week the HCF associates spent the morning at Harvesters’ sorting food to be included in the “BackSnack” program. Over 13,000 back packs full of nutritious food are given to low income children each Friday during the school year so that these children are not hungry over the weekend. Packing the bags is virtually a volunteer process that is shared by many folks from the Kansas City area. Read More.
