2009 Key Dates for Grant Deadlines

HCF has announced the 2009 deadlines for Healthy Lifestyles, Mental Health and Safety Net grant proposals.

Living on the Edge

What would happen if a car accident or a lay-off left you without a job and resources? Could you survive a month in poverty? We invite you to walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty by participating in Living on the Edge, a community action poverty simulations presented by the Missouri Association for Community Action. This simulation will dramatically demonstrate how much time and energy many families have to give just to survive day-by-day in poverty. The hour simulation will be followed by a facilitated discussion about public-policy initiatives and what our communities can do to address poverty and improve the health of our residents. The simulations begin in November and run through April. Click here to register.

Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?

HCF is proud to sponsor a groundbreaking documentary series that crossed the country exploring how the social conditions in which we are born, live and work profoundly affect our health and longevity. The four-hour series, Unnatural Causes, will air on Kansas City Public Television on Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. throughout the month of October.

Grantee Spotlight: Hope House

One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Each October, communities across the country celebrate National Domestic Violence Awareness Month to bring awareness and recognition to agencies who work year round to help victims of domestic violence.

Hope House is Missouri's largest domestic violence agency, offering 104 beds in both Independence and Lee's Summit, Missouri and a wide range of services. In 2007, Hope House provided shelter to over 700 women and nearly 500 children.

HCF has provided Hope House with over $330,000 in mental health and applicant defined grants over the past three years to aid the work done through its Guardian Program and Health Project. Read more.
