MHC was selected by the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City (HCF) to receive $375,000 to bring Missouri’s statewide Health Information Exchange (HIE) network services to Swope Health System, Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center and KC CARE Clinic, three Federally Qualified Health Centers serving low income and uninsured Kansas City residents. In addition, Artists Helping the Homeless will receive secure encrypted email service allowing them to safely email clinics and hospitals for referral services.

“The benefits of information technology are not an event but an evolution and we appreciate the willingness of providers to work on these complex efforts on behalf of their patients,” said Bridget McCandless, M.D., HCF President/CEO.

MHC announced today that this funding, combined with a grant from Saint Luke’s Health System, will be used to provide the electronic connection needed for these clinics to exchange medical records and link with the statewide HIE.

“We are excited about the opportunity to provide the immediate exchange of electronic medical records from across the state to additional medical providers in the Kansas City metropolitan area. It’s very important to MHC that these safety net providers are part of our statewide network” said Mark Pasquale MHC’s President and CEO. “The exchange of medical record information improves the delivery of health care services; this is our primary objective at MHC.”

Serving over 68,000 patients at 17 clinic sites, these clinics will be able to electronically share medical records directly with Saint Luke’s Health System and other participating members of MHC.

“If a specialist or hospital doesn’t have a complete medical record at the right time, it’s a problem.” said Pasquale, “With instant secure communication and records, providers are better able to have the right information, at the right time, when the patient needs it. We are grateful to the HCFGKC and Saint Luke’s Health System for their support and excited about this wonderful opportunity to expand MHC record exchange services in the Kansas City area.”

By joining the MHC network these clinics will be able to:

Exchange and query the MHC network of more than 70 hospitals, 350 clinics and community health centers and enable more than 7,000 physicians to quickly and securely access patient health records when treating their patients.
Have immediate connectivity and interoperability with MO HealthNet (Medicaid), offering clinical and claims data for all Medicaid patients.
Strengthen patient-centered care by providing more accurate and complete health records.
Reduce risk of adverse events by providing a patient’s baseline data, medication history, and allergy information.
Reduce overutilization of medical services by being able to access an on-demand and up-to-date clinical patient record which reduces redundant tests and treatment.
Expedite the physician referral process and care coordination with the ability to securely send clinical care documents, discharge instructions, and other records to any health care provider.
